3 Types of Insulation Used by Our Insulation Company in Oshawa

Considering getting services from an insulation company in Oshawa or throughout the GTA for your home? Whether you’re in need of a complete insulation solution or are simply looking to add on to what already exists in your home, you have options. These are the most commonly used types of insulation and their attributes.

Batt Insulation

Batt insulation continues to be one of the most popular and affordable options available. It comes in blankets or rolls and can be made from any of the following:

  • Fibreglass is naturally fire-retardant and will not be damaged by small amounts of moisture. However, it’s prone to air breaches, especially if not installed correctly.
  • Rockwool is made from large amounts of recycled material and is fire-resistant. It can withstand small amounts of moisture without being damaged. It has similar problems with airtightness as fibreglass insulation.
  • Cotton insulation is sometimes called blue jean insulation, as it’s often made from recycled denim. It’s prone to getting damaged if wet and requires application of chemical products to make it fire-retardant. Not very airtight.

Blown/Loose-Fill Insulation

Blown insulation is most commonly used in attics, either as a complete insulation solution or as an addition to existing insulation when homeowners wish to beef up what they already have. It’s great for any non-uniform surface but requires special equipment to be applied. Like batt insulation, it can be made from different materials including:

  • Fibreglass, which is fire-retardant and not damaged by small amounts of moisture. When applied correctly, it can achieve good airtightness.
  • Cellulose is made from recycled newsprint and a fire-retardant compound. It does not stand up well to moisture infiltration but is very affordable and a good sound dampener.
  • Rockwool is fire-retardant and made from a high portion of recycled content. It won’t be damaged by small amounts of moisture.

Spray Insulation

This is the most airtight variety of insulation and therefore a great option for energy-efficient homes. It’s sprayed on surfaces in liquid form with a special machine. As the foam dries, it hardens with thousands of tiny bubbles inside. Spray insulation is great for uneven surfaces and tight corners and crevices. However, the application process is sensitive and requires the services of a professional insulation company. There are two types of spray insulation:

  • Open-cell, which is more porous and susceptible to moisture penetration. However, this variety is more affordable.
  • Closed-cell spray insulation, which stops moisture, as well as air. It has the highest R-value of all insulation types, but you’ll pay extra for it.
